Real royal weddings

Months after principal photography for The Prince & Me had begun in July of 2003, an announcement was made public on October 8, 2003 that a real Danish royal was engaged. Crown Prince Fredrick and Mary Donaldson, a commoner he met at the 2000 Olympicâ games in Sydney, Australia, will wed on May 14, 2004.

Another royal wedding is also set for May of this year -- at noon on May 22 at the Nuestra Señora de La Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, to be exact. The engagement of Spain's most eligible bachelor, Prince Felipe to Letizia Ortiz was made official on November 1, 2003 in an announcement made by the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.

In other royal circles, Princess Stephanie of Monaco wed Portuguese circus performer Adans Lopes Peres in Switzerland in September of 2003. And, on June 30, 2003, Dutch Prince Johan Friso made a public announcement that he plans to wed Mabel Wisse Smit.

To complete the production's adventure with royalty, director Martha Coolidge remembers an incident that happened on the first day of scouting in Denmark. "We were standing in the snow outside the palace in Copenhagen and we saw the Queen," recalls Coolidge. "Then, after finishing our last day of shooting, we were having lunch in a small restaurant in Copenhagen again when our Danish producer introduced us to a beautiful woman sitting behind me -- Princess Alexandra of Denmark. She was very charming."
